The Great Faery Face-Off; Half Time!

Julie Kagawa's great Faery Face-Off between Puck and Ash is at half time!! And so far, Ash is in the lead! But don't hold your breath...there is still a chance for Puck so what WE need to do is get all of you who haven't voted over to Julie Kagawa's blog where you can vote for Ash! :)

If you haven't read Julie's debut book, The Iron King, then you should A. Pick it up - immediately, and B. Go and vote for Ash anyway (I assure you all I have excellent taste in guys! And if you read the book and think otherwise, I bet you I can change your entire perspective in about 5 minutes ;)).

So bottom line is - vote for Ash! :) (I'm also going to try my hand at some fan art, just for the occasion, yay!).

See my original post right here and my review for the Iron King here.

GO ASH!

(And as a departing note, man, my fingers as freezing. They're so cold and pale you could mistake them for a corpse. Yeah, really. So, ouch, my poor fingers, this post was hard to write. But GO ASH!).

Review; The Iron King by Julie Kagawa (+ some other Kagawa news!)

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

Description; "My name is Meghan Chase. In less than twenty-four hours I'll be sixteen. Countless stories, songs and poems have been written about this wonderful age, when a girl finds true love and the stars shine for her and the handsome prince carries her off into the sunset.

I don't think it will be that way for me."

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny - one she never could have imagined...

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school...or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth - that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face...and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

Review;
One of my earliest memories of this book was the day it came out. I remember seeing it in the stores, thinking it looked interesting but never possessing the time to pick it up (and for that, I am an idiot!). Finally, about 2-3 weeks later, I picked it up in Target while shopping with friends (they go to the clothes section, I go to the books section). I agonized and agonized over buying it (another idiotic moment) for a good half an hour, reading and re-reading the book description and trying to decide if it was really the book for me. Call me silly, but I have this no romance/no "happy" (I mean, satisfying) ending = no read. (LOL). As long as it meets that at the end, I'm ecstatic to see any bumps and bruises thrown in along the way! :) I was so unsure that this book was right for me...but being the over-thinker I am, I tucked it under my arm and marched to the checkout before I could change my mind.

Best. Decision. Ever.

Really :)

The Iron King was captivating from the word go. I started it late one night after slugging my way through another book and was finished by 10 am the next morning (yes, I did go to sleep after an hour of reading!)

Julie Kagawa has incomparable imagination and writing so fluent you can't help but drift off on her unique, lovable style. I was SO impressed that she built her world from Shakespeare's play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" - one of my favourites. Not only did this create a sense of familiarity, it also gave the book suspense. Right when you thought you knew where the plot was going, thanks to your intimacy with Shakespeare's play, you were whirled in a whole other direction that was gripping, fast-paced and thrilling.

Every character possessed depth and Meghan is possibly one of the best heroines in Young Adult fiction today. She matured far beyond her years in the novel and made strong, selfless decisions. She learned quickly the "fine print" to faery bargains and even then made sacrifices in order to save her kidnapped brother. This was not only admirable but evoked a sense of pride within the reader for Meghan and her maturity on her journey.

The world Kagawa creates in this book is beyond any imagery I've ever seen before. Yes, Harry Potter and Twilight, I'm talking about you. The Iron King doesn't just describe a magical world which you can see through the eye of the imagination. It brings it to life in a way that makes you feel it and experience it vividly, almost deceivingly tangibly.

At times, there were so many mythical creatures it was *almost* difficult to keep track - but not quite. For me, as a reader, this only thrilled me all the more because I know there's going to be MORE to pick up on when I read it for the second time after writing this review!

And if you're a romance fan let me say, just quietly, Ash is the bomb. A huge, icy, swoon-worthy bomb with such impact that I want a hot-and-cold boyfriend who hurls icicles. (How cool!!) His character was one I particularly loved, gorgeousness and gooey romance aside, because he was so complex. He teeters between the pain of his devastating loss and his growing attraction to Meghan and although there will be obstacles ahead for them, I know he'll do right by her. :)

And Grimalkin... :) I love Grimalkin. If you think you own a cool cat, he's got nothing on this fellow!

Definitely a Five-Horse rating and now in my Top Two favourites (Hush, Hush being the other! and they're an equal first if you must ask). My hat's off to you, Julie. Thank you so very much for such a fantastic story and I wait in anticipation for more Ash, Meghan, Grimalkin and Puck in the Iron Daughter! :)

And while we're here, some exciting news from Julie Kagawa's blog! She's revealed the cover to The Iron Daughter, second in the Iron Fey series (and has been floating around the web before now, I believe, but here it is again in all it's awe-inspiring greatness!).

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron Fey, iron-bound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her. Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's alone in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

THE IRON DAUGHTER will be published by Harlequin Teen.

Look for it in August of 2010.

(Taken from Julie's Website)

Below is the never before seen cover to the free novella being published by Harper Teen in June of this year, "Winter's Passage". It tells of Meghan and Ash's story to the Winter Court, right after the Iron King finished. What a great way to get us through the wait for the Iron Daughter! :) Here is the beautiful cover;
Cheers!!

Crescendo Cover Revealed!

I know I'm late at posting this, but I've been away :P :D

Here is the artwork for Becca Fitzpatrick's highly anticipated sequel to Hush, Hush!

Thoughts? I'm personally worried that the feather signifies Nora "letting go" of Patch...which I'm sure more than half of the fan base doesn't want! I can't wait for the release of this book and hope that Becca will keep our hearts - and Nora's - intact :)

Lisa Desrochers April Debut Contest!

Lisa Desrochers is holding a contest in which the winners can pick one of her favourite debuts for April, or a signed ARC of her novel, Personal Demons, due out in September 2010! To find out which books are available in the contest, click above!

While we're here, I want to share the blurb for her book with you all!

"PERSONAL DEMONS (Tor Teen, September 14, 2010)
Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She's spent years keeping everyone at a distance—even her closest friends—and it seems her senior year will be more of the same...until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can't seem to stay away from him. What she doesn't know is that Luc works in Acquisitions—for Hell—and she possesses a unique skill set that has the King of Hell tingling with anticipation. All Luc has to do is get her to sin, and he’s as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn’t stand a chance.

Unfortunately for Luc, Heaven has other plans, and the angel, Gabe, is going to do whatever it takes to make sure that Luc doesn’t get what he came for. And it isn't long before they find themselves fighting for more than just her soul.

But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay…for all of them."

Sound cool? Yeah, I thought so :)

I'm Back!

Well, two weeks ago I started my blog (yay!) and this whole week I've spent travelling here and there, so things have been a bit disruptive!

But, I have a plan! Mwahaha.

Hopefully within the next few days I can get some more reviews posted (including a bad one. Yeah, my first bad review, yikes!). I'm also going to be posting more on whats been happening around the blogosphere. There's heaps of activites and hot-topics going on currently, so hopefully I can include some of those :)

Current read is Melissa Marr's "Fragile Eternity".

I also found a really cool quote on a fellow blogger's profile; The Story Siren quotes Oscar Wilde when he says "If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all." Thought I'd share this, as it's now one of my favourite quotes and entirely true. If a book is on my top-ten list, it will be because I could read it over and over and over and fall more in love with it every time! :)

Cheers!

Review; Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Synopsis;

“His eyes sliced into me and the corners of his mouth tilted up. My heart fumbled a beat and, in that pause, a feeling of gloomy darkness seemed to slide like a shadow over me. It vanished in an instant, but I was still staring at him. His smile wasn’t friendly. It was a smile that spelled trouble. With a promise.”

For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. Not until Patch came along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora can’t decide whether to fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is in the middle of a centuries-old battle between the immortal and those that have fallen – and the wrong choice will cost her life.

Review; This is a remarkable debut by an author with incredible imagination. Hush, Hush is one of those books you can read and reread over and over again and appreciate the creativity, passion and integrity of a little more every time. I read this book 4 times within the first month of owning a copy!

Nora is a wonderful heroine with real backbone. Unlike some, she resists her attraction (and aversion) to Patch in order to weigh up the benefits and negatives of a prospective relationship with him. Being positioned with her throughout the novel was not just bearable, it was fun. Often, it is so much easier to dislike the female lead than it is the male, but in this case, you couldn't help but adore Nora.

And, of course, what made Nora an even more exciting character was the explosive effects when teamed with Patch. Patch was amazing - witty, good looking (duh) and with a dangerous vibe. I could tell the exact moment he'd changed his mind about Nora and realised there was more to his feelings than he'd care to admit. To accomplish that is truly amazing writing.

Amongst all this are the paranormal elements and the mystery of Patch's real identity. Not to mention, the fears that he may be stalking Nora...or is comeone else lurking in the shadows?

If you love a thrilling read with addictive romance, Hush, Hush will take your breath away. A huge five horse rating from me, as my favourite book of all time! Not to mention the amazing cover art!

Cheers!

Review; Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

Synopsis; At Fairfield High School, on the outskirts of Chicago, everyone knows that south siders and north siders aren't exactly compatible elements. So when head cheerleader Brittany Ellis and gang member Alex Fuentes are forced to be lab partners in chemistry class, the results are bound to be explosive. But neither teen is prepared for the most surprising chemical reaction of all - love. Can they break through the stereotypes and misconceptions that threaten to keep them apart?

Review; Perfect Chemistry is one of those novels that reels you in from the moment you open the very first page. Not my usual choice of YA (as I tend to lean towards Paranormal and Fantasy), Perfect Chemistry made such a lasting impression that it is now one of my favourite books.

Elkeles's writing is fluent and her style is enchanting as she masterfully weaves this tale that portrays life as it really is without an abundance of flowers and daisies, but with hope and mystery that will keep you hanging in until the very last word. Brittany's story is one of depth and she's a well developed character who defies the typical cheerleader stereotype in ways that will really strike readers hard (but in a good way!). Alex, roughened by the streets, is one of the most lovable characters and his life story is quite the eye-opener. Watching these two characters mature and battle through their personal demons; Brittany's ill sister and disfunctional family and Alex's hopeless ties to the Latino Blood will leave a lasting impression.

With both so thoroughly defined by stereotypes, add in the bet Alex made to seduce Brittany, mix a little family troubles and sprinkle an unbreakable attraction on top and Elkeles has presented us with a winning combination. Perfect Chemistry is perfect for those looking for something a little different that resonates with real life issues and comes together in a beautifully crafted ending.

I accept no responsibility for those who find themselves immobile for an entire day as they devour this read (as I did!). :)

If it is a synopsis you're after, you're in luck! Here it is, right from Becca's own website;

The sequel to the New York Times best-selling phenomenon, Hush, Hush! In stores everywhere November 16, 2010.

Nora should have known her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described as anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Patch is starting to pull away and Nora can't figure out if it's for her best interest or if his interest has shifted to her arch-enemy, Marcie Millar. Not to mention that Nora is haunted by images of her father and she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to him that night he left for Portland and never came home.
The further Nora delves into the mystery of her father's death, the more she comes to question if her Nephilim bloodline has something to do with it as well as why she seems to be in danger more than the average girl. Since Patch isn't answering her questions and seems to be standing in her way, she has to start finding the answers on her own. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?

Rules of Attraction - Simone Elkeles OFFICIAL book trailer

I'm only a month behind in noticing this, but there's an official book trailer for Simone Elkeles's new novel "Rules of Attraction" set to be released on the 13th of April, 2010. It's the sequel to the enrapturing "Perfect Chemistry" and tells the tale of Alex's brother Carlos, whom we met in Perfect Chemistry. This is the OFFICIAL trailer and is a book trailer unlike any I've ever seen before! As opposed to flashes of images and words, this trailer has actual acting and features Alexander F. Rodriguez playing "Alex Fuentes" (<3) and Giancarlo Vidrio playing "Carlos Fuentes". Quite amazing and I'm sure I'll watch it 28376592 times!

Review; Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side written by Beth Fantaskey

Review!

(Yes, I'm going to review books I love in no particular order until I've caught up to what I'm reading right now and yes, I'm going to rate them with horses!).

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side - Beth Fantaskey

Description; Marrying a vampire definitely doesn't fit into Jessica's senior year 'Get-A-Life' plan. Enter a bizarre new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu who claims Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth and he's her long-lost fiance. He's arrogant, officious and embarrassingly overpotective, and, well, incredibly hot.

Armed with a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire's Guide to Dating, Health and Emotions, Jessica tries to imagine the transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But just when things start to heat up with Lucius, a devious cheerleader sets her sights on him.

Soon Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war - and save Lucius's soul from eternal damnation. All of which leaves her to wonder: wouldn't life be easier if she could just fall for a nice mortal boy?

Review: The first thing I noticed about this book was its gorgeous cover. So much that whilst leaving the Borders store with it tucked under my arm, I flashed it proudly for everyone to see. For me, this was just the beginning of everything wonderful this novel would hold.

First of all, we meet Jess - funny, brave and individual, I found a lot of her personal traits were something I could easily relate to and I enjoyed being positioned for the most part of the book with someone so strong and comfortable in her individuality. Fantaskey did not disappoint, and unlike some who leave readers anxiously awaiting the introduction of  the male love interest, allowed Lucius a quick and easy entrance which set the plot in motion. I loved the interactions between Jess and Lucius, which varied from funny and sweet to intense, and watching them both grow and mature as they fought their way through several unprecedented obstacles to eventually fall in love. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of the letters Lucius wrote to his Uncle - it gave a lot of insight into his perceptions and watching him change and grow as a character through his own eyes was a clever technique which only made me love the book just that bit more. This would be the perfect book for romance fans seeking a happy ending, but with a little hardship along the way. I couldn't put it down and read it in only one day! The ending will leave you breathless and thirsting for more.

Overall, an excellent read and one of my all time favourites. It won't be for everyone's tastes, but I can't recommend it enough. The vampires are traditional, yet unique to the modern day, and Beth has even included extras on her website for you to read right here. This one gets a dignified 5-Horse rating from me (extra if I could!).

Is it a bird? A plane? No...it's a blog!

So I have a blog.

I don't really know why.

But, I have one now....so watch out!

It was fun to make pretty blog, so now I guess, I'll use it!

A bit about me... I'm an 18 year old Australian who is determined, no matter what, to become a published author some day. Currently, in total, I've written around 1.7 million words (at my last count about 6 months ago) and am still writing! My current WIP is Young Adult fiction with a few romantic twists and currently stands at 83,000 words with a lot to go! It's had 2 major plot reworks so far and the date I have set to have the first draft complete is May 15th. Here's to hoping I get there!

I also read a lot. I panic if there is not at least 6 books in my "to read" pile for fear I'll turn around and have nothing to read. So I guess I'll post some reviews in this blog too, to get the word out about what amazing fiction is out there for YA's! Currently, I'm reading "Ink Exchange" by Melissa Marr (I'm probably the last person in the world to do so). :)

Cheers!
Emma :)
